A Girl’s Guide to The Superbowl Party

FootballYour husband or boyfriend is amped for the Superbowl; Greenbay Packers vs Pittsburgh Steelers and wants to have the party at your house.  A party?  Great!  You have no problem entertaining but usually it’s for dinner.  It’s not so great if you hate football or have no clue what all the excitement is about.   So how can you survive this special day for football lovers?  Throw the best party out there and learn a few things about football!

Let’s start with the basics, the Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League.  The Super Bowl is always on Sunday in February and is one of the most watched American television broadcasts.  The game is the main focus but the whole broadcast is an event.  Commercials and the Half-time show have become significant aspects of the event.  All in all, it’s a huge part of American Pop Culture.

If you don’t know much about the sport of football this will be your crash course.

Football PartyUnderstanding the sport can give you ideas on how to prepare for the party.  There are two teams and the goal is to score the most points in 4, 15 minute quarters.  The game itself is one hour but it lasts about 2.5 hours.   You want to buy enough snacks and beer for that time.   If you forget anything or need more food, half-time is after 2 quarters.  A touchdown or 6 points, is obtained by getting the ball to the opponents end zone or end of the field.  They can also score points by kicking the ball through the goalpost.   The goalpost is a yellow, Y or H shape stand located at each end zone.   There are a few other ways to gain points but those are the main ways to score.  The team that has the ball is on offense and the other is on defense because they are “defending” their end zone.  The offensive team’s quarterback, a very important role on the field, throws the ball.  The offense, or team with the ball has 4 chances to get about 10 yards down the field.  The quarterback usually passes the ball or hands it off to a player who will run down the field.  The rules and strategies of this is complicated and not necessary to know.   Understand the two teams, who they are, and how they score.

Who are the two teams?  Is one team representing your home state?  If so go out and represent by buying bowls, cups and plates with their team logo.  It will make the party more themed and add spirit to the fans coming over.  This is not a dinner party and you don’t need a 3-course dinner and dessert.  Get a variety of snacks, finger foods, and beer.  Chips and dips, sandwiches, wings, mini burgers, Italian beef and home-team decorated cupcakes, For a big party I suggest your basic beers (Miller or Bud) most people will be satisfied with drinking that.  Soda, water and ice are essential for the non-beer drinking fans.

Now you know what you need to do, you have a basic knowledge of the game and you’re ready for Super Bowl Sunday!

Thanks, I made my girl friend read this, and her questions were kept at a minimum this year.
